Public Speaking

Toastmasters Clubs provide members with the opportunity to develop their public speaking and leadership skills within a supportive environment, which includes structured educational goals and constructive feedback. Members also benefit through significant personal growth and increased self-confidence. Toastmasters International is a not-for-profit educational organisation founded in California in 1924 by Dr. Ralph C. Smedley. It has a membership of over 352,000 in 16,400 member clubs located in 141 countries.

The Ashfield Toastmasters Club is one of six in Area 32, which is part of the Phillip Division of District 70, encompassing most of New South Wales.

Each year four competitions are held – members compete in the Humorous Speech Contest, the Table Topics Contest and the Evaluation Contest up to District level, while the International Speech Contest is an international competition, the winner of which is known as the World Champion of Public Speaking.

The Club is in its 12th year and has attained President’s Distinguished Club status in each of those years. The Club meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month at 7:00PM, on Level 1 of the Ashfield Catholic and Community Club. Meetings run to an agenda, finishing at approximately 9:15PM. Guests are welcome to attend a meeting to see how they are organised, and have the opportunity to take part if they wish.

Embark on a journey of personal and professional development through Pathways, Toastmasters’ new education program! Pathways is designed to help you build the skills you need to communicate and lead. It is comprised of 10 paths that teach more than 300 unique competencies.

As you progress through Pathways, you will:

* Practice and improve your communication and leadership skills.

* Give speeches in your club based on assignments in Pathways.

* Challenge yourself to build and refine certain competencies and skills.

* Complete a range of projects that include persuasive speaking, motivating others, creating a podcast and leading a group in a difficult situation.

* Develop real-world, transferable skills in many different areas through Pathways—communication, leadership, management, strategic planning, service to others, public speaking and more.

Members find that the benefits of what is learned in Toastmasters extend into their personal and professional lives.
